Good product, has some plusses over earlier model, one downside
Kidde makes good CO detectors. We've had several Nighthawks for years and they've worked well (at least we think so, never had a CO problem). Our previous version was the the COPP-3 (we had a couple of experiences with the low battery chirping-- a nuisance in the middle of the night--and once, it happened again shortly after we had put a new battery in. Others have had many more problems in that regard--see reviews).

It was time to replace them. We first bought 3 Kidde KN-COPP-B Front Load Battery-Operated Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Digital Display--but ran into several problems (see my review). The biggest problem was that Amazon's stock was old (the detectors were over 2 years old) and the warranty was only for 5 years. Other downsides are that they required mounting and were only battery operated! We returned them making use of Amazon's consumer-friendly return policy.

We then bought this model. It has these great features.

1) Comes with a 7-year warranty (new feature, old had 5 years).

2) Shows the CO level continuously. It's reassuring to see the red LED showing 0!

3) Has a well designed, clearly organized printed manual (a small booklet).

4) Operates off of AC with a battery backup. (That's helpful as you have the best of both worlds!)

5) Has peak level button (this is a new feature).

6) Battery included.

A Big Downside:

A big downside is that they eliminated the plug on a cord. That was really helpful as it gives the user real flexibility in where to put the detector. In our bedroom, the only accessible plugs are beside a dresser in a corner or between bookshelves and the TV stand, meaning less air flow. With the old model, you could plug in the device and then with the cord, put the detector on the top of a bookshelf or stand. Much more convenient.

The other problem, which plagues all the CO detectors and many other products on the market, is the infuriating, hard plastic packaging. It's hard to open and I even cut myself on it. There are alternatives that are just as secure but much friendlier to the environment and the customer!

We still have a year or two left on one of our old ones, so we're keeping that. We also bought a First Alert CO615, which does have the cord, and we'll probably move that into our bedroom when the time comes. (But it has more negatives--see review!)

i love this alarm, i feel very safe with it in the house. it's quite and every one should have one in there house. the price is very good and i recommended this product to all of you that thinkin of bying the monoxide alarm.

Excellent replacement smoke detectors
I had to replace my seven AC powered Kidde smoke alarms that were installed when the house was built several years ago. The old alarms had been giving annoying false positives from time to time. I replaced them with Kidde i12020 alarms that connected easily to the existing wiring and ceiling mounts. The i12020 alarms were also reasonably priced.

I hope they continue to make these.I just love them & will continue to buy them..in my town,only alarms with battery backup are code,consequently no one sells these here..I refuse to buy things that are annoying-ALL the battery powered & hard wired battery backup alarms GO OFF when the battery voltage is low,usually in the middle of the night,& you don't know which one needs a battery-THEY ALL SOUND OFF...this Kidde i2020 alarm is hardwired into your system(I have them everywhere)& they only go off when they sense smoke-they have NO BATTERY BACKUP=NO FALSE ALARMS,OR LOST SLEEP. however:they will not work in a power outage.that rarely happens,certainly not as often as batteries go bad.I will never be awakened by bad batteries again-I'll gladly take my chances with these little jewels.they are also very inexpensive.

An inexpensive, good fire alarm.
I bought 3 of these a few months ago. My wife and I cook a lot and were getting many false alarms from cooking food with the BRK fire alarms. This fire alarm works MUCH better at false alarms. It's only gone off once since purchase, however when it did, the silence button only worked for about 10 seconds at a time, which is very annoying. The instructions say the silence should last for 8 minutes. I was forced to unplug the unit until cooking was done.

Update 2/24/09: The 8 minute silence does work - the silence button needs to be pushed in once to silence the alarm, and again to activate the 8 minute delay. It will glow red when the pause is active. This is a 5-star fire detector, but for some reason Amazon won't let me change the 3 star rating.

Easy Installation
Kidde 21006181 Battery Operated Smoke Alarms, 3-Pack

I bought this on the Gold Box deal. Needed new smoke alarms. They were easily installed. So far, the kitchen alarm has only gone off once - when I had forgotten something on the stove. A great deal, a good brand, easy to install and set-up.

Good alarm, good price
The alarms were easy to install, though they didn't quite fit the screw holes for our previous (really old) alarms. The button which one has to silence nuisance alarms works fine. It does cause the system to emit a periodic beep, which doesn't bother me, but caused the dog a great deal of concern.

We just had a new water heater installed, and the basement alarm kicked off very quickly after the installer started soldering the pipes. We are happy with the alarms, and the price (a deal of the day) was excellent.

Good, but very sensitive
This alarm was easy to install and seems like a great alarm. However, it is VERY sensitive and goes off almost any time we're cooking anything - even if there's no smoke.

We have to take it out of the base everytime we are cooking on the stove or in the oven. THe hush button works, but it's only temporary - and only for about 3-5 minutes before the alarm sounds again. If the hush button stopped the alarm for maybe 20 minutes then it'd be better as you'd be done cooking by then a lot of the time.

So we've found it to be somewhat inconvenient on a day-to-day basis but if there were ever a fire in our house we really would want to have a sensitive detector to alert us ASAP. So we're keeping it due to the safety aspect.

Pleased with these long-life smoke alarms
I've had two of these Kiddie 0910 alarms installed a couple of months... and two earlier "NightHawk" models (with the same model number) for several years. They seem to be doing the job without the annoyance of annual battery changes - Recommended!

Low Maintenance Smoke Detection and Fire Protection
Question: What made you buy the Kidde 0910 10-Year Sealed Lithium Battery-Operated Smoke Alarm with Memory and Smart Hush?

Answer: I wanted to add smoke alarms to the bedrooms in my house, but didn't want to have to be climbing up and down a ladder to randomly change batteries in the alarms when they started chirping. A 10 year battery?! Even if it lasts half that time I'll be thrilled!

Easy to install with a cordless drill, this smoke alarm is activated when you put the unit to the bracket attached to the wall or ceiling. The only negative I can find about this set-up is that IF you disengage the smoke detector from the bracket, the unit is deactivated and you have an expensive hockey puck. * DON"T unscrew it from the bracket once it's installed!* If the smoke detector goes off (when you are cooking for example...) push the Smart Hush button instead of tearing it down with a broom handle as I've been prone to do with other types of smoke detectors. The reason I give it 4-stars versus 5 has to do with this potential for 'Oh no!' if you forget and unscrew it instead of using the hush.

The alarm ships with a comprehensive user's guide, a packet with two screws and mounts, the mounting bracket and smoke detector unit. Easy installation, low maintenance and a fair price. This one's worth the money!

Easy installation, so far no false alarms
I purchased this unit in October of 2008. While I cannot rate this detector's ability to detect fires, it was easy to install. It replaced an old unit, and it took me about 10 minutes to remove the detector one and install this one.

In almost 8 months that I have been using this detector, I have not had any false alarms.

Updated Smoke Alarms
Our communiity Fire Department inspected our residence, at my request, as we were having problems with our 12 year old smoke alarms. It was their recommendation to replace the the existing hardwire alarms with Kidde P12000 Dual Photoelectric and Ionization Sensor Smoke Alarms. The fire department even came out and installed them for me. They tested OK and no alarms incidents have occured since installation, THANK GOODNESS....

Kidde PI2000
I picked this because I had BRK detectors that were 10 years old and needed to be replaced, and the information here suggested that the Kidde PI2000 was a more or less direct replacement. I followed Christopher's suggestions on the replacement with the addition of checking the voltage at each location after I tripped the circuit breaker. No use killing myself because the builder screwed up the circuit. Installation was as he described.

I don't like the design of the units in one respect. With my old detectors, when the battery failed, you could stand on a chair and open a little drawer, take out the dead battery, put in the new one, and be done. Kidde's design appears to be intended to defeat having a unit online without a battery. I will have to get a 6-foot step ladder, unscrew the detector from the ceiling, remove the electric plug on the detector, open the battery door which is on top of the unit and unreachable with it installed, remove the old battery, install the new one taking care that the "battery reminder finger" is under the battery, put the door back on, plug it back in, then screw it back into its mounting bracket.

Grrrrr.

Replaced all smoke alarms in my home
Replacing my current ionization only sensors was easy. I was able to swap out 11 linked sensors with these in about 2 hours. I also was able to make sure that they worked as one of the batteries had a defect and started overheating. There was no visible smoke, but I could smell the burnt insulation smell from the small plastic cap on the battery connector. The alarms all went off as they should have. Replacing the battery in the sensor corrected the issue. I did like that a simple check of the LED let me know which one detected the issue.

Great little alarm at a fantastic price
I wanted to install some extra smoke alarms in my law office and bought 3 of these. They are perfect. About 4 inches in diameter, they were easy to install and are not even noticed by visitors. Each tests fine and I sleep better at night with the extra protection. Great value at under each. 5 stars. Will likely buy more

Smoke alarm
I like the smaller size. Nice compact piece of equipment. I can't review how well it works, which is actually a good thing, as it means I haven't needed to use it!! I purchased several of these for my home and my rental property.

Gets the job done
Not much to say for an economical detector. It has no frills, but its cheap price allows you to install more than would otherwise be the case. My advice is be sure you can easily get at them because when it goes off, you have to take out the battery to stop it. It will go off at the scent of smoke, so be ready for false alarms -- installation location is critical to your sanity.

Great Product
This product looks good and was easy to install.

I bought 2 alarms and have had no problems with the TV remotes setting them off.

Money well spent
This unit smelled the smoke two rooms away when no one else even knew the pan in the kitchen was smoking. I'll put it this way, this detector will give you the time you need to avoid a very serious fire.

Lithium Battery does NOT last 10 years!
Although the included battery is marketed as a "10 year" battery, we found itlasts less than three years. And the battery has a 10 year warranty which explicitly omits any warranty of battery service life! So the 10 year claim is strictly hype, and misleading.

Great smoke alarm, but a little buggy
I purchased 2 of these a few months ago and installed them on separate floors of the house -- they seem to work great, all the reviews point to this model, and they do look great and install easily. The remote options for testing and silencing false alarms is also great.

The only drawback I've found is that very occasionally, turning the lights on (especially when it is dark and no ambient light is available) will set them off for at least 2-3 alarms. I don't know if it is because we have CFL bulbs (the kind that turn on quickly) in the hallways used for both alarms, but sometimes if you turn the lights on at night you get a very unexpected jolt from the piercing alarm. It's not the worst thing in the world, and shows it is working, but I suspect it's the photoelectric sensor portion (that most other smoke alarms leave out) that causes the false alarm.

Overall, though, a great alarm. Highly recommended!

Easy install..fits right over the electric box where old one was installed...this is a newer model of the old one...working fine so far...

BRK 9120B Smoke Alarm
Had nothing but problems with the older model BRK Smoke Detector installed by the contractor who built our home. After months (years) of chirping, replacing batteries and cleaning them did nothing to stop the annoying chirping which woke us up all hours of the morning. So far, these replacement units have not let out a chirp and seem to be working fine.

Excellent smoke detector replacement
This replacement for the originally installed smoke detector functioned flawlessly immediately. The only thing that keeps me from rating this a 5 is the battery compartment is a little difficult to deal with, particularly when changing batteries in an overhead placement.

Quick and easy to install
Needed 6 to replace all the 10-year old Smoke Detectors in my townhome. Contractor pack was just right price. The units were compatible with 120V connector already in place. All that was needed was replace the mount, which was simple. A philips screwdriver and a ladder, and each one took less than 5 minutes to remove and replace.

I was repacing a BRK alarm system that was constantly going off on false alarms, so when this "first alert" came in a BRK box I was annoyed. However it appears to be ok so far after a month. Only time will tell for sure.

Replaced my aging smoke alarms
I recently replaced the 14-year old smoke alarms in my home with these 9120B units (identified as the suitable form-fit-function replacements for the contractor grade units that were installed when my home was built). Good price for a 6-pack. Installation was a breeze since the power leads from the old units worked without modification for the new units. Note: old units had labels indicating a 10-year service life, so if your home is older than 10-years you should consider replacing your residential smoke alarms.

Did a fair amount of research on these because our "old" ones did the oft-reported chirps and middle of the night full on alarm for nothing. My kids are now (unfortunately) well trained to sleep through the alarms... In any event, I finally gave in and bought these. No chirps so far or middle of the night false alarms yet.

In my research I saw that there was ultimately no difference between the BRK brand we had and the First Alert as FA had bought the other company. Also reported as an issue by others were the dates on the units. These new ones were ok - not super recent but around a year old, so hopefully will last a while. (Of note, I remarked taking them down that the old ones were dated right at the time they were installed - so perhaps professional contractors have access to the latest ones?). Per advice online of others I did purchase from Amazon directly.

Even though the newer models required a new plate to be installed, it was 2 screws off and two screws on and done - so really no big deal. The same electrical plug-ins still worked.

I will post back if we have problems, but I also saw just after these went up that they now have these brand new flatter ones. I would have looked into those.

Works great
Excellent replacement for older model. 2nd one bought this year and both are working perfectly. No false alarms and easily plugs into existing wiring. Install time is approx 15 seconds. 90 seconds if you need to replace the mounting ring.

First Alert SA9120BCN Smoke Alarm Hardwire with Battery Backup
Hey, its a smoke detector. I bought it to replace and older version that needed to be replaced years ago although I didn't realize it. There's really no way to know how good it is. Hopefully I'll never have to test it. The unit it replaced was very sensitive to outdoor pressure changes.
This one was literally a snap to install as it has the same wiring chassis so all i needed to do was replace the old collar with the new one, snap in the wiring and twist mount the smoke detector in. The test button worked flawlessly and it comes in an awesome shade of white that blends into the ceiling paint really well. This model includes a battery backup which is important for a hard wired unit.

good product / great replacement
I purchased 2 of these to replace some old AC only detectors that were probably 14 years old. Since the wiring and boxes already existed, install was easy. My old harnesses were slightly different so I did have to replace those, but no problem. I saw some other reviews about the 9V batteries not making good contact and causing units to chirp indicating low or batt issue. I have not had that happen. The batteries seemed to make contact just fine. Good products and awesome price. Local hardware and retail definately did not have this good of price
